Feeling Overwhelmed? Take a breath and take these steps.
First Steps:
Every State in the United States and every Country has unique rules and guidelines that you must know and follow in order to legally home educate your child. FInd the various government documents that outline these rules and guidelines below.
.Once you have familiarized yourself with the pertinent laws in your area, here are some other things to consider: Have you notified the necessary people/ offices? Have you officially withdrawn your child from public/private school? What will you name your school? Will your school be religious or secular? Now, take a deep breath and keep going to the next step!
Remember, you are not alone—you have us! Now, build your community both locally and online. Find local co-ops, homeschool groups on social media, online classes, clubs, and supports, and extracurricular opportunites. Explore and socialize!
If possible, it's best to decide on a philosophy of education before choosing your curriculum or methods. Your homeschool approach will be determined by your philosophy. You may choose curricula that you feel comfortable teaching, or you may choose it based on your child's unique learning style. Homeschooling Connections can connect you to a variety of curriculum options under What's Next?
The homeschool journey is much easier when you have the support of family. How do you have the conversation with skeptics? How do you overcome their fears and objections? At what point do you just move on?
Homeschooling is, at its foundation, a lifestyle choice. Successful homeschooling families incorporate outside activites as well as schoolwork into their schedule. You will also want to consider who will teach, how you will keep records, what your daily schedule will look like, what subjects you will teach, and even what you will use as your 'school space". Here you will find some suggestions to get you started.
Once you have decided upon your educational approach, then you will need to purchase an appropriate curriculum. Will you choose an online school? Will you choose religious or secular curricula? Will you sign up for classes that require a particular curriculum? Will you choose an all-in-one curriculum or different curricula for different subjects? Whatever you are seeking, there are multiple quality options, and if you don't find them here you can always ask for guidance!
Whether you are in the US or another country, if homeschooling is legal, there is a legal organziation available to support your journey. Know your rights and seek out these legal associations! HSLDA is in the US. HEFA is in the UK.
Once you have determined your schedule, it's time to figure out where the extra fun will fit in. Do your children love sports? Gaming? Art? Writing? Dance? What kind of field trips sound interesting? It's fun! Don't stress, but also don't overcommit!
